Edith has always loved nursing and she has always nursed frequently. She also loves to nurse at the most inconvenient of times for me like when we are out to eat. During the first six months of her life it didn’t matter what time of day it was or if she had just nursed before going to a restaurant she would always want to nurse as soon as my food arrived. It was like she had a sixth sense about that sort of thing. She could smell the food as it was being walked towards our table and she would wait and just as it was being set down in front of me she would start to fuss.
I spent the first six months covering Edith with napkins as I tried to carefully scoop food from my plate and scramble to get it into my mouth. Most of the time it was just too challenging so I watched as Neil enjoyed his meal using both of his hands while I sat with a baby on my boob and my food growing colder. There were times that I would purposely order cold foods just because I knew that Edith would want to eat as soon as my meal arrived.
Edith’s constant desire to eat with us at every meal has forced me to become comfortable with nursing in restaurants. I honestly have to say it is probably the one place I get the most looks but hey I am not going to sit home and never go out to eat because I am a breastfeeding mom. Luckily things started to get easier once she started solids, finally she could sit up in a highchair and finally she could participate in the meals with solid foods. She still nurses often at restaurants but now it usual before or atfter a meal which means I get to eat warm food with two hands.
